But what is cashmere?

Cashmere wool is an animal-based fiber derived from the long wool of Tibetan goats (Capra hircus laniger), a species of goat originally from the Tibetan highlands in the foothills of the Himalayas, and not from the Kashmir region from which it only inherited the name. Today, this type of goat is mainly present in Mongolia and China, but can also found in Iran, Siberia, Afghanistan, Nepal, andAustralia. In winter, in addition to its permanent coarse hair, called jarre, the Kashmir goat produces a secondary down, cashmere, which is used for making clothes, particularly, scarves. At the end of the winter period, when temperatures warm up, the goats moult naturally. They are then combed to recover their wool, which is then cleaned to separate the down from the hard hair and any impurities. This process eliminates about 80% of the initial weight of the wool. A Kashmir goat produces only 50 to 80 grams of down per year, a raw material which will be transformed into thread, and then the thread into fabric.

These goats possess the special property of having a fur that is three times more insulating than sheep's wool. In addition, their fiber is softer, finer and lighter. Cashmere is therefore an ultra-warm, ultra-fine and ultra-soft material.
